Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.


Author Guidelines

  • LUMEN accepts English manuscripts of up to 12,000 words, including abstract, keywords, appendices, footnotes and references.
  • A word limit of abstract is 150 to 200 and at most 5 keywords.
  • Authors should refer to the Chicago Manual of Style for general questions of style, grammar, punctuation, and form, and for footnotes of theoretical, descriptive, or essay-like material.
  • LUMEN defers to author preference in decision about the naming and capitalization of racial, ethnic, and cultural groups. Manuscripts should be internally consistent in this regard.
  • References must be in MLA format.
  • Footnotes should be used instead of endnotes.
  • References should be in the following format:
    Author(s), Title: Subtitle (Town of publication: Publisher, Year), p. x.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word format.
  3. Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  4. The text is single-spaced; uses a 11 point with 2-inch margins; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end; and paper size should be 15.7 x 23, even if printed on A4 paper.
  5. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  6. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review, which is found in About the Journal, have been followed.

Privacy Statement

Manuscripts are considered anonymously. The author’s name must appear only on the title page; any references that identify the author in the text must be deleted and delivered in the form of attachment.
