Towards an Ecclesiology and Spirituality to Cooperate with the Church in China

Jeroom Heyndrickx

Abstract

This article describes the principles which the Verbiest Foundation in Belgium respects in carrying on dialogue with the Catholic Church in the People’s Republic of China. It notes the sincerity and devotion of early missionaries, but points out that there was something lacking in their attitudes. The Second Vatican Council brought about a shift in the Church’s self-understanding that is conducive to better relations with China. The author stresses that cooperation must, according to the Vatican’s own guidelines, pass through the local bishop. Foreigners must only act in accordance with local bishops and in respect for the law of the land. The article concludes on an optimistic note, trusting that dialogue and respect will prevail.
