The Function of di’autou and en tē(i) zōē(i) autou in Romans 5:12-8:17

Fabrizio Tosolini

Abstract

By using the method of literary analysis and following the logos of the section, the present article shows that, in the frame of Rom 5:1-8:39, after a general introduction (5:1-2), the two prepositional phrases: through him and in his life (5:9,10) announce two thematic developments: we are saved through Christ (5:12-21) and in his life (6:1-8:17). In this way Paul proves, with regard to the basic problem of sin and death, that we really have access to this grace (5:2), and that hope does not deceive (5:3-11; 8:18-30) and it is therefore possible to boast in God (5:11; 8:31-39) even in the midst of the tribulations that accompany Christian life. Literary analysis offers a sound foundation for such a reading, thus contributing to the solution of the problem of finding the keys to interpret the logical unfolding of the text.
